Population problems in Nigeria

Managing population problems in Nigeria

People die everyday and more babies are given birth to daily. This is a continuous cycle that has given a rise to the trend of population problems in Nigeria. Population problems have been in existence for quite some time. However it appears that the government is not doing much to manage this problem. It's not inappropriate to conclude that we're heading towards population explosion.
The knowledge of the population of any state or country is very important. It will aid the development and adequate provision of social services. It shouldn't be all about the scramble for money and political power. Without the knowledge of the country's population,  the government cannot properly and effectively plan for the all round growth and development. An attempt to plan without an idea of the population will result in a shortage of everything-electricity,  water,  education and health services.
Nigeria's population problems have several causes. First and foremost,  during the census,  figures are inflated. Census is the process of numbering the people in a certain geographical area. Many of the local governments are insincere with the figures they put out. This is because the more the population the more the resources and political recognition. This has resulted to uneven sharing of resources. While some communities have more than enough others barely have enough.
The cultural beliefs and lifestyle of the people is another contributing factor. In some parts of the country,  the natives believe in having so much children. They're raised to believe that having many children equals to many helping hands on the farm. However many of these families can't take care of these children. Some of them are later sent into the streets when they're of age to fend for themselves.
The good news is; population problems can be controlled before resulting in population explosion. There are many preventive measures,  one of which is family planning. A lot has been said about birth control and family planning in the past with little results. Awareness about family planning should be intensified with free registration that more families would practice it and in turn it would yield good results. The essence of the project is to ensure that each family doesn't have more kids than it can cater for.
Funding for the health sector should be increased. This is a act to reduce medical tourism in foreign nations. The fine is tho be used for training medical personnel and equipping hospitals with good facilities, machines and equipments. Then the  masses would have full confidence in the nation's medical facilities and health care centres. There wouldn't be a need for bringing so many children to the world for fear that if some die,  some others would live to take care of their parents in their old age and give them their own grand children.
The government has at a time or another made policies on population control. Such policies should be backed by a legislation which would make them more effective.
Finally, if carefully followed, these measures, would make the country a properly organised place. Population explosion would be prevented from happening. Population problems would be well managed. In due time, the country would regain its pride and move from being a developing nation to a developed one.
