Drug Abuse and Youths in Nigeria.
Drug abuse is a social menace that is growing at an alarming rate in Nigeria. In time past, there have been various cases of drug abuse trending daily.It appears that there is an extension of these issues into the present. Many people of all age groups involve themselves in drug abuse. It is especially prevalent among the youths and adolescents. It has now become a part of their lifestyle as they tend to engage in it unconsciously.Drug abuse claims responsibility of 35% of youth death in Nigeria.
Young people are driven by many factors to engage in drug abuse.Peer pressure is a major reason why youth engage in drug abuse.Youths are often influenced by their peers and as a result, they do whatever their peers are doing which often times includes gross abuse of drug substances.The youth thirst for recognition and fame and always wants to feel among .This makes them to do anything to get what they want and end up getting involved in drugs. At the intial stage, trying it for the first time , they do not enjoy it so much but for the want of that familiar feeling, they continue and often they end up as addicts.
Frustration is another of the numerous reasons why youths engage in drug abuse.When they are facing diffcult times in their lives, they become depressed. It could be an emotional trauma, mental disorder or psychological breakdown.They turn to the use of drug as a source of relief from their pain. Often, they make use of drugs that numb their senses that for that period of time, they will be oblivious of the lmmediate surronding or condition. Others choose to drink to stupor and they start to act strangely.
Unemployment is another cause of drug abuse. It might sound strange but it is. Yearly, the youths graduate from the university and after searching, they find no jobs. Out of not been gainfully employed, they begin to involve themselves in drug abuse. It is a common saying that "an idle man is the devil's workshop". Since they have no profitable jobs, they take drugs to keep themselves occupied.
In addition, the foundation and home training of many youths is poor. They are products of bad parental upbringing. Remember, parents are mirrors for the young ones. A child whose parents engage in drug abuse is most likely to do the same. Furthermore, parents who do not properly monitor their children are leaving room for drug abuse to stay in. It is inevitable that young ones will meet new people and make friends. Therefore parents who are not close to their wards only help them to get whose.
Drug abuse can result into so harms on the individual, family and the country. Such person bears a high risk of having mental disorders. The substances in some drugs can destroy the brain and nervous system. Thinking straight would be a difficulty. It could as well lead to untimely death, risk of contacting HIV/AIDS and other incurable cancers among others.
Crime rate in the society would be on the increase due to drug abuse. Armed robbery, kidnapping, fraud and more or atrocities committed by drug influenced youths. They flaunt their ill-gotten money by spending lavishly on cars, clothes and parties. The youths become terrorists of the society. Several lives are also lost.
Definitely something can be done to control this societal problem. First, charity begins from home. Parents should train up their children properly. Well trained children would be able to resist peer pressure. Public enlightenment should be carried out in schools and higher learning institutions. In addition, some effective corrective measures should be put in place for drug laws offenders.
In conclusion, if we are all ready to play our roles, drug abuse will become a less frequent headline. With improved efforts, drug abuse could become history. Then the nation would be proud of its youths for being hardworking and successful future leaders.
