Costa Rica is a small country in central America. She gained independence from Spain on the 15th September, 1821. The capital city is San Jose. The official language in Costa Rica is Spanish. Their currency is called the Costa Rican Colon (CRC). Here are some facts you probably didn't know about Costa Rica.

1. Costa Rica has a colourful currency.

2. Costa Rica has no army.
3. More than 99% of its electricity is generated using renewable energy. The renewable sources are: hydropower, wind, geothermal energy, biomass and solar.
4. Costa Rica actually has the highest literary rate at 96% for children.
5. Costa Rican people refer to speed bumps as dead persons.
6. Coffee tasters in Costa Rica are as important as wine tasters in France. Coffee tasters undergo five year of training to differentiate the tastes.
7. It is a crime to drive your car into San Jose on the day of the week that corresponds to the last number on the car's license plate.
8. Unlike in the USA and other parts of Europe, Costa Rica does not have winter but a dry season from December to April.

9.Mail is part of the independence story of Costa Rica. When the country received its independence in 1821, it took a month for the people to know of about it, as news of it had to be conveyed via mail by a mail courier on a mule who took a month to get to the people.

10. You can call it the hummingbird capital of planet earth. Costa Rica has a quarter of the 300 hummingbird species found on earth, impressive for a country its size.

11. Compared to its size, Costa Rica has the second highest number of rivers and water bodies in the world. This number of rivers can be attributed to the massive rains due to the presence of a rainforest.
